Miss Piggy for Virgin Atlantic

Virgin Atlantic is a leading British airline, operating long-haul flights between London and North America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia. In 2001, the company launched a television ad campaign promoting the airlines' "Upper Class" service, a series of 30 second spots in which celebrities praised a particular feature.

Miss Piggy (puppeteered by Nigel Plaskitt[1] and voiced by Eric Jacobson) appeared in one July[2] spot, praising the luxurious complimentary limo service, and telling the viewer that if their airline doesn't offer that, "Well, vous picked the wrong airline, buster! Kissy kissy."

Other stars appearing in the campaign were Lady Victoria Hervey, Iggy Pop, and Stephen Fry.[3]

In a profile of Rainey Kelly Campbell Roalfe/Y&R, the Financial Times mentioned development of the campaign. "...I'm instantly immersed in the glamour of advertising. On the agenda: choosing the ideal celebrity to star in the latest Virgin Atlantic commercial. Suggestions range from Pamela Anderson to Miss Piggy. Apparently, it's hard, because the budget is so tiny - only ยฃ9m, or some such figure."[4] That budget was down to ยฃ7 million by launch.[3]

Notes[]

  • The airline's founder, Richard Branson, was a 2007 recipient of The Jim Henson Honors, in the category of "Celebration."
