Part 1: Gordon plays a game of "What Will Happen?" with Ernie. After Ernie guesses correctly what will happen when Gordon drops a ball and turns on a radio, he asks what will happen when he picks up a bell and shakes it. Ernie says the bell will ring. Gordon asks what else will happen. Ernie doesn't think anything else is supposed to happen. Gordon says that a monster will come out and start blowing a flute. Ernie thinks that's silly, but is surprised when that exact thing happens. Gordon admits that he had worked it out beforehand with Cookie Monster, and gives him a cookie. After Gordon leaves, Ernie has an idea for a trick to play on Bert.
Part 2: Ernie tries to play the same trick on Bert, but when he rings the bell, nothing else happens. Bert thinks Ernie's gone bananas, and he leaves. When Ernie wants to know what happened, Cookie Monster says that he couldn't play the flute, because his mouth was full of cookies. | |||

Ernie announces he plans to take a nap, but just as he gets comfortable in bed, Cookie Monster (who was hiding in the bedroom) sneaks up and distracts Ernie with a bell, hoping to steal Ernie's pillow. Ernie investigates, thinking the bell was coming from a fire engine, but he reasons that he would still be hearing the bell if it were that; Cookie quickly hides. Cookie tries his diversionary tactic twice more, with Ernie thinking it is the telephone or the doorbell. The third time, Ernie catches Cookie with the pillow. Ernie tells Cookie he can't have the pillow and demands it back, but Cookie breaks down in tears and says how much he wants the pillow. Ernie suggest that they share the pillow, but Cookie - having the wrong idea - takes the pillow and tears it in half. Ernie cries in frustration as he tosses his now-useless pillow on the floor, while Cookie eagerly begins to eat his half of the pillow. | |||

Bert uses circumstantial evidence - cookie crumbs on the counter, near the empty plate - and his own eyewitness account (he had seen someone, dressed in Ernie's trademark red and blue shirt, with a black tuft of hair and giggling, near the cookies earlier) to implicate Ernie. Ernie maintains his innocence. Just as Bert begins to ask Ernie who else might have taken the cookies, the actual culprit enters the room: Cookie Monster, dressed as Ernie - complete with a black scalp of hair and his shirt. Cookie grabs Ernie's plate of cookies, greets Bert and giggles just like Ernie. Ernie and Bert collapse onto the floor in disbelief. | |||

Part 1: Cookie Monster sleeps over in Bert's bed at Ernie and Bert's apartment (as Ernie explains that Bert is visiting his grandmother). After Ernie turns off the light, Cookie Monster is scared about a monster in the corner, but Ernie points out that it's just a toy chest covered by a shaggy blanket. Cookie ends up sleeping in Ernie's bed.
Part 2: Cookie Monster returns to Bert's bed. As Ernie and Cookie Monster both say goodnight, Cookie falls fast asleep. In a dream sequence, Cookie is at a bakery shop, with a group of cookies flying around and singing about different kinds of cookies, which frightens Cookie Monster. After Cookie wakes up from the nightmare, Ernie reassures Cookie that he was just having a bad dream. So, Ernie gives Cookie a plate of cookies, which scares Cookie, resulting in him running out through the door. Ernie says to the viewers "Cookie Monster afraid of cookies? I don't believe that." Ernie is in a counting mood, and decides to count all of the cookies in a box of cookies. Cookie Monster overhears this and asks if he can have all of the cookies after they are counted, and Ernie agrees. But after opening the box, Ernie finds that there are 0 cookies. Ernie has another box, but it also has 0 cookies in it. Ernie then remembers that he put all of the cookies into a cookie jar, and starts to count, but Cookie Monster impatiently eats all of the cookies before Ernie can finish counting.
