SCENE 3 Maria readies herself for a date with David by Oscar's trash can. Oscar complains that she all she ever talks about is David - "What's so great about David, huh?! He isn't even green!" Maria suspects that he might be a little jealous, though Oscar doesn't know the meaning of the word. Once educated, he denies he feels this way, citing that he doesn't like anybody enough to feel jealous. She tries to wring a response from him about how much he likes her, but this is against the Grouch code, he claims. "But, I might sit next to you at a movie," he says, "if you didn't smell so good." Maria goes on to tell him that she likes many different people beyond David for different reasons, even Oscar himself. Oscar admits that if she catered to his own interests a little more (such as not bathing, losing her front teeth, and eating onions), he might ask her to a movie sometime too. Feeling flustered, he goes back in his can to break some dishes. Maria remains struck and flattered by what she considers "the nicest thing" Oscar has ever said to her.
