Andy Devine after slating the movie for Baby Piggy

Andy Devine (1905-1977) was a prolific character actor known for his raspy voice, portly frame, and genial manner. A staple of Western movies and TV shows, Devine's credits ranged from radio (The Jack Benny Program) to the classic 1939 film Stagecoach (with John Wayne) and the TV series Flipper (as old salt Hap Gorman).

Other notable roles included sidekick Cookie Bullfincher in nine Roy Rogers movies, deputy Jingles on the Wild Bill Hickok series (on radio and TV, produced between 1951 and 1956), and the voice of Friar Tuck in Disney's animated Robin Hood.

  • The seventh season Muppet Babies episode "...At the Movies" includes multiple clips of Andy Devine from the 1937 movie A Star Is Born. Devine played assistant director Danny McGuire, and his distinctive voice is heard saying they're ready for the director, and yelling "Quiet!" during Baby Piggy's screen test.
