COLD OPEN | What's the Word on the Street?: Stupendous
SCENE | Elmo welcomes the viewer and shows off a dollar his daddy has given him, which he can spend on whatever he wants. He's surrounded by several options - flowers from the Flower Shop, a CD from some rapping penguins and detergent from the laundromat. He settles on some ice cream from Hooper's Store, but Alan reports his ice cream maker is busted and Luis is currently fixing it.
SCENE cont'd | Suddenly, a Salesperson happens by with her cart full of balls. She promotes the latest and greatest item she has - Stupendous Ball! Through song, she demonstrates the wonderful things Stupendous Ball can do - bounce, light up and make music! Elmo wants to buy one, but she points out it costs $5 and he's only got one, which can buy him "Stinky Ball." Elmo wishes to have the Stupendous Ball instead.
SCENE cont'd | Elmo asks Luis where people get money and replies by working. Noticing Elmo wants some cash, he offers him a job helping him. He hands Elmo a wrench, which he uses to help Luis fix a bolt on the ice cream maker. Luis rewards Elmo with a dollar, making a total of $2 for Elmo. He goes back to the Salesperson, who tells him he's still short of cash, but his $2 can get him "Average Ball." Elmo still wants the Stupendous Ball. Elmo feels as though he'll never be able to afford the Stupendous Ball, when Luis explains how he can save his money. He converts his bolt jar into a piggy bank so Elmo can keep his money in it until he has enough saved up for the Stupendous Ball.
SCENE cont'd | In a musical montage ("Elmo's Gonna Save"), the two penguins sing about the various ways Elmo's earned and saved money. He finally saves enough to buy a Stupendous Ball!
SCENE cont'd | Elmo runs into the Salesperson and is about to buy the Stupendous Ball, when Cookie Monster comes by, sobbing. He tells them he was on his way to the bakery with a dollar for cookies, but he got so hungry, he ate the dollar, so now he can't get cookies. Elmo decides to share a dollar with Cookie Monster instead of buying the ball. The Salesperson points out that with $4, he can buy Fantastic Ball, which is very appealing to Elmo. He buys the ball and plays catch with Luis, while a jealous Stupendous Ball sequesters itself in a nearby tree.
