SCENE 1 Joey and Davey Monkey approach Oscar's newsstand, wishing to buy the latest issue of Amazing and Exciting True-Life Banana Tales. Oscar happens to have a copy, but the monkeys can't have it; he's holding it for someone who's already paid for it. The person turns out to be Ruthie. The monkeys feel betrayed and start sobbing, until they learn she bought it for them! Oscar moans that today will be a happy day on the street, but thinks things will turn around once Joey and Davey start arguing over who gets to read the magazine.
