Sesame Street Season 14 aired from November 22, 1982, to May 20, 1983.
Overview[]
For this season, the curriculum focuses on literacy and its value. Street scenes and segments demonstrate reading in a context (such as sight words and signs), as well as different literary forms and how reading can be useful and enjoyable.[1] Notable examples include Telly Monster's attempt to write a grouchy story appealing to the discriminating tastes of Oscar the Grouch, Mr. Snuffleupagus typing letters in order to get to know someone better, Big Bird teaching the viewer how to get a grown-up to read them a story, Big Bird reading a giant-sized map to get to his friend's cabbage cookoff, and the Sesame Street residents participating in writing a new slogan for Hooper's Store.
Season 14 begins with a week of episodes partially shot on location in which Big Bird takes his first solo journey without the cast to Camp Echo Rock. The elusivity of Mr. Snuffleupagus is also built upon when Snuffy begins to leave more mysterious clues for the grown-ups, who continue to believe that he is just a figment of Big Bird's imagination. Maria in particular is intrigued, as she finds herself repairing Snuffy's toaster, discovering his giant-sized hat and snuffle warmer are tangible objects (after Big Bird believes them to be fantasy), and taking Big Bird's word as she patiently waits for his arrival.
Characters and segments[]
Captain Vegetable, a rabbit superhero who encourages children to eat healthy foods, makes only one appearance this season before becoming a minor recurring character next year. Oscar's cantankerous Grandpa Grouch also makes his first of several appearances, showing how the Grouches' family tree has always bared bitter fruit. Telly Monster delivers his first Monster on the Spot report to give the scoop on feeling sad, and Don Music, previously seen mainly in Sesame Street News Flash segments, is added to the recurring Muppet cast for street scenes.
This was the final season to feature Mr. Hooper, as the actor portraying him (Will Lee) would pass away during production. The character's death is addressed during the first week of the following season.
