"Everybody Sleeps" first appeared on Sesame Street in Season 3.
The song accompanies a film about sleeping, which includes scenes of people and animals sleeping in various ways. Some scenes were replaced in the 1990s (see video releases). The film originally had a shot of a man falling asleep in a chair, only to fall out of it, which was later replaced with a shot of astronauts sleeping.
A similar song called "Everybody Eats" uses the same tune, but has lyrics that pertain to food and eating. The song was also remade as "Every Kitty Sleeps" for a Suzie Kabloozie cartoon.

Video releases
The song was included in the Bedtime Stories and Songs video. When that video was re-released under the title Sleepytime Songs and Stories, the 1990s version with different footage was used instead of the original. The original version is included on Old School: Volume 1 as part of Episode 0406.
