Maria welcomes the viewer and tells them about the dream Elmo is telling her about. Elmo starts his story again. Just as he went to sleep, he began to dream about some chickens, who taught him the "Clucky Clucky Chicken" dance, soon joined by a lizard, tomato and a woman named Gladys. Elmo plans on falling asleep, so he can have the dream again, but Maria tells him dreams don't re-appear like that, but sings him a lullaby anyway. Elmo doesn't fall asleep, but Maria's farm-animal customers do. Elmo decides to go somewhere else.
Elmo situates himself onto a crate with his blanket and Baby David, but doesn't feel tired. Rosita appears with her guitar and plays him a chicken lullaby, which puts him to sleep. However, he instead had a dream about tickling a cow instead. Before she can help anymore, she rushes to her guitar lesson.
Big Bird comes by and is filled in on the situation. He runs off and brings back a book that could help - I Dream of Chicken (by Dr. Petula Cluck). Big Bird begins reading the book in chicken, but since Elmo can't understand it, he translates. The book states to dream of chickens, one must stare at one before falling asleep. The two make chicken sounds, hoping one will appear.
Their calls don't attract a chicken, but Bob arrives in full chicken costume, having just been apart of Prairie Dawn's latest musical, Cluckalot. Although Bob wishes to get out of his outfit, he offers to help them out anyway. Big Bird reads in the book that to dream of a dancing chicken, the chicken he stares at must too. Bob does some chicken dancing and clucking, accompanied by Rosita's lullaby. Elmo falls asleep and experiences his dream again!
