Gordon is taking Miles, Telly, Rosita, and Elmo hiking in the park. Telly can’t keep up because his pack is too heavy. The contents of his backpack include soap in case he falls in the mud, a tent in case it rains, a flashlight in case he wants to look in dark places, binoculars, a whistle, and a dictionary in case he wants to look up a word. Everyone takes one thing from Telly’s pack to lighten the load. Elmo thinks it’s silly to pack a tent, but Telly disagrees.
Something hits Telly on the head, and he asks Elmo if he threw something at him. Everyone starts getting hit on the head, and Gordon explains that they are being hit by acorns. If the acorns fall in a good spot, a new oak tree will grow.
Elmo stops the hikers to point out a turtle (to introduce the next two segments).
Elmo stops the hikers to point out flies (to introduce the next segment).
The hikers stop for lunch, but Telly has forgotten his lunch. Everyone else shares part of their lunch with Telly so he won’t go hungry. Elmo thinks it’s silly that Telly brought things that nobody would ever need, and yet he forgot his lunch. Just then it starts to rain, and they pitch the tent Telly brought.
Everyone is glad Telly brought the tent. Elmo asks if Telly knew it would rain. He didn’t—he just tried to think of everything someone might need if they were in the park for a whole day.
