An announcer says that today on Sesame Street is the story of the Cloud Who Wanted To Leave the Sky, starring Rosita as the sun, Elmo and Lexine as the prince and princess, Luis as the carrot, and Bob as the little cloud who wanted to leave the sky.
Ruthie serves as narrator. While the prince and princess walk in the park, they hear someone who sounds very angry. It is the cloud (Bob), who is on the ground. He says that everywhere he goes, people tell him to go away, so he’s leaving the sky forever. The cute little red prince and the princess say that clouds belong in the sky. The cloud laments that it started yesterday, when he was over the beach, singing a song, minding his own business, when he saw a father and daughter on the beach: Bob sings a verse about how a fluffly little cloud is a person in your neighborhood. The father and daughter ask him to leave, because he is blocking the sun. Rosita, the sun, asks him to leave, too. So he floats away singing, and comes upon a farm, but a farmer (Ruthie) asks him to leave because her vegetables need sunlight. A carrot (Luis) asks him to leave too, and the sun says she already told him once to go away. The cloud says fine, he will leave the sky forever. After hearing his story, the prince and princess are determined to find a reason for the cloud to go back to the sky.

The prince and princess tell the cloud that everyone wanted him to leave when he was blocking the sun, but he could go in the sky at night, when there is no sun. He does just that, singing “a fluffy cloud’s a person in your neighborhood...at night.” The father and daughter see him again, and ask him to leave because he’s blocking the stars. The moon (Telly) asks him to leave because he is blocking the moonlight. The cloud decides once again to leave the sky forever. The prince and princess keep thinking about how to get the cloud to go back to the sky.
