Elmo welcomes the viewer to Sesame Street, and announces that he's going to be a farmer today. He shows Rosita that he has everything a farmer needs: sunlight, dirt, a flower pot, a watering can, and of course, a hat. Rosita volunteers to be his farmhand, and Elmo reveals what they're going to grow: eggs. They put the egg into the flower pot, cover it with dirt, add the water, and fantasize about the egg tree that will grow from the pot.
Elmo and Rosita wait anxiously for their egg tree to grow, when a chicken named Lurlene comes by and asks them what they're waiting for. She says they'll have to wait a lot longer for their "egg tree" to grow -- even longer than the time it takes to count to 40. When they're done counting, she explains that eggs come from chickens, not trees. Elmo gets inspiration to grow something else, and asks Lurlene to dig a hole while he and Rosita go elsewhere.
Elmo and Rosita have come back with something else to plant: spaghetti! They plant a strand, and fantasize about growing a spaghetti tree. As they wait, they sing the alphabet song.
Gordon encounters the three of them waiting for the spaghetti tree to grow. He breaks it to them that spaghetti is made, not grown, and points their attention to the following segment ...
When the song is over, Rosita and Lurlene decide to play tag instead of farming. Elmo doesn't feel like being a farmer anymore either, and asks Gordon to take off his hat.
On his way home, Elmo notices Stinky feeling sad. He's been in the sun for some time, and is very thirsty by now, so Elmo decides to water him. It makes Stinky feel much better, and Elmo feels optimistic about being a farmer again. He waters Stinky again, as Gordon announces the sponsors.
