COLD OPEN Elmo presents the day's sponsors. Jamal tells him that today is Newspaper Collection Day and they're collecting newspapers to be recycled. Elmo wants to pitch and save a tree too.
SCENE 1 Elmo wants Gordon to give him his newspaper so he can recycle it. Gordon tells him he can have it when he's done reading it and tells him to pass the time by watching the manatees...

SCENE 2 Gordon is finished reading the paper, but Elmo gets upset when he hands it to Susan to read now. They explain that it would be wasting more paper if Susan had to buy her own, so Elmo allows it.

Film A little girl narrates a film about how cans can be recycled. She washes them and collects them in a wagon, which she takes to the recycling center. There it is sorted and separated with a magnet. After its loaded onto trucks, it is taken to a factory to be melted and shaped into new cans like the ones seen in her fridge at home.

Muppets Ernie and Bert: Ernie can't sleep, so Bert tells him to count sheep. Ernie tries to count sheep, but it's dull -- so he starts counting fire engines. The noise from the imaginary fire engine wakes Bert up. Bert says that Ernie's waking up the whole neighborhood, and tells him to count something quieter. Ernie counts balloons -- but the balloon gets bigger and bigger, finally bursting with a huge explosion that wakes Bert up again.
