Big Bird and the Birdketeers are excited because they're about to meet "the world's greatest actor." Just then, they think they hear the sound of Wolfgang barking, and soon find out that it's Sir John Feelgood pretending to be a seal! He gets a standing ovation from the unseen crowd, and Big Bird remarks how convincing he was just now. Sir John points out that all it takes to be an actor is a great imagination, and sings "That's Pretending" as he tells Big Bird and the Birdketeers what to pretend to be.

Big Bird points out to Maria that Sir John is coming to the Fix-it Shop to get his toaster fixed. "Alas, poor toaster," he laments sadly, "I knew you well." He pretends to be a slice of bread going down into the toaster, then popping up ("I was once the toast of Broadway, you know!"). Maria tells him to pick it up later, and Sir John sadly says goodbye to his toaster. Big Bird says goodbye to Maria in the same way, but accidentally crashes into something while walking backwards.

While caught up in the routine, he doesn't notice that the girl has finished eating all the oatmeal.

Sir John comes back to Hooper's, and asks Mr. Handford for something to read. He picks "Wheels and Speed" magazine, because he likes to pretend he's a fast racing car -- which he does, scattering the newspapers in the stand as he zips around. He also spots "Elephants Illustrated" which reminds him how much he likes pretending to be an elephant. He lets out a trumpeting noise, which is so good it attracts the attention of a real elephant. Finally, he asks Mr. Handford for "Cuckoo Clocks and Gardens", but Hooper's doesn't have a copy of it, so Sir John pretends to read it, and the elephant joins him in saying "cuckoo!"
