SCENE 1 Elmo observes Mike talking with Big Jeffie and Little Chrissy, who will be performing at Mike's high school dance tonight. However, lead singer Little Jerry has caught the chicken pox and can't perform, meaning they'll have to cancel. Mike suggests he could fill in and shows off his talents by singing a little of the Monotones' first hit, "Mad." Chrissy is less than impressed, however. He tries to sing "Sad" instead, but forgets the words. He has Elmo, another Little Jerry fan, sing some of the song. Chrissy and Jeffie are very impressed and invite him to replace Little Jerry, thus becoming "Little Elmo and the Monotones!"
