Elmo asks Bob and Gina why they are wearing bathrobes, and they reply that they are kimonos. One of Bob's best friends, Hiroshi, is visiting from Japan and they want to make him feel at home. They are going to serve fish, rice, and tea for lunch, and are going to greet him by saying "Konichiwa, Hiroshi-san". Hiroshi arrives wearing a sweater and a baseball cap, says hello, and wants a hamburger for lunch. Elmo doesn't believe he is Hiroshi from Japan, until he explains that Japanese people wear sweaters and eat hamburgers sometimes, too.

Hiroshi shows Elmo how they serve tea in Japan. Bob teaches Elmo to say "Domo Arigato", which means "thank you very much". Bob feels like he is back in Japan Elmo thinks Japan sounds nice and wants to go there right now, but Bob tells him that it is too far. But Elmo understands near and far--he is near Bob...then he runs to the other side of the arbor...and now he is far. To explain to Elmo that Japan is much farther than that, Hiroshi sings a song ("How Far Is Japan?" by Joe Raposo and Nancy Sans) about how long his airplane flight was.

Hiroshi prepares a story for everyone (including Oscar and Slimey) called Umeko and Kuwa. In the story, some Japanese Anything Muppets mock a young girl named Kumeko for having a worm for a pet. When the annual festival arrives, Kumeko is without a new kimono to wear. Overnight, her worm turns into a moth and has her use his cocoon for silk for a new kimono. At the festival, everyone is amazed at her new outfit.
