SCENE 1 | Maria wonders why Hooper's Store has been tidied up, with flowers in vases, doilies on the counter, and soft music playing on the radio. Mr. Hooper admits he's preparing for a visit from his "kid brother" Arnold, and Maria notes how sometimes siblings try to show each other up. Big Bird learns of Arnold's visit and rushes off to get his toys, taking the term "kid brother" literally. He bumps into an older man along the way, who turns out to be Arnold, who greets his brother warmly as they exchange Yiddish expressions.
Arnold thinks the store could be improved by losing all the plants, doilies, and such. Big Bird returns with a wagon of playthings and is surprised to find Mr. Hooper's "kid brother" is actually an adult, though he still offers a game of jumprope or jacks. | |
