SCENE 1 Olivia is minding after Hooper's Store while Mr. Hooper delivers groceries, when Bert approaches the counter to order a soda water. He'd like it flat, with no flavored syrup or ice cream in it. Olivia obliges, but goes out of her way to note that Bert must be the only person in the whole world who prefers his soda water that way. A voice is then heard from off-camera, coming from the window counter of the store, placing an order for plain, flat soda water. Olivia and Bert both freeze, then slowly turn to see Bertha; she looks almost exactly like Bert, but with long, black, stringy hair. Bert's jaw drops and there's a long pause before the camera cuts back and forth between the two as romantic music swells.

SCENE 2 Bert and Bertha sit together in the arbor talking about pets. Bertha says she's just on her way home from bringing her pet to the doctor, and asks Bert to guess what kind of animal it is. From a series of clues, Bert nervously deduces that Bertha's pet might be... a pigeon? Bertha confirms, and introduces Francine, who was not sick after all; just lonely, according to the doctor. Bert shyly offers that she doesn't have to be alone anymore, and introduces her to one of his pet pigeons, Gus. They both notice that the birds have a lot of common, which leads Bert to sing "Bert's Love Song".
