SCENE 2 Tom temporarily leaves Big Bird in charge of Hooper's Store as he runs an errand across the street. While Big Bird takes his place behind the counter, he tries to discover what is causing a dripping sound nearby. He turns the switch on the mixing machine and gets a whirr; he pushes the keys on the cash register and gets the sound of a drawer opening and a bell dinging; he presses the button on the alarm clock and gets a ringing. Finally, Tom turns the handle on one of the faucets and the dripping sound stops. They listen to how quiet the store is now; Big Bird thinks it's too quiet and asks to hear the water dripping again.

Tom ends up encouraging Oscar to bottle up the air for Grouches; that way, there will be less polution for people, making them happy.

We hear the oompah of a tuba, some thunder, and then a guitar strumming.

Oscar immediately rescinds his window idea, breaking it to pieces and instead arranging them onto his piano.
