SCENE 1 Susan and Frannie talk with John about some of his recent repair jobs and Susan reminds him about the bookcase she wants him to fix. She and John then go over to Oscar, noticing he looks sad. Oscar admits that he wishes he were an octopus, which he believes can make all kinds of music.

Susan remarks that the octopus in the cartoon is a special octopus, as they don't usually play music. Oscar still wishes he could make music of his own (preferably rotten), but he doesn't even own any instruments. John shows him how he can make his own drumstick out of a broom handle and a rag, then how to use his own can as the drum. Oscar is pleased, but wishes he had a band to play in like the octopus did. Susan and John agree to go find more people and instruments they can make from ordinary objects.
