SCENE 1 Mr. Hooper gets a call from a distressed Oscar who asks him to come over to his can. He wants to take his grouch friends to the movies because one of the worst films of all time is playing: "The Cowboy and the Meanie" starring Roy Rotten and his horse Crummy. The problem is, he doesn't have enough money, so he needs a job. Mr. Hooper offers to employ him in making sundaes at his store, which excites Oscar. Oscar goes to gather his ingredients …

In Ernie's apartment, Oscar learns that Ernie wants someone to "duckie-sit" his Rubber Duckie. Oscar thinks this is beneath him, but agrees to do it anyway. Ernie shows him how to take care of the duckie: float him in the tubby, wash his little head and back with a scrub brush, and sing happy little songs to him. Just as Oscar is ready to do those things, Ernie hears from Rubber Duckie that he doesn't want to be away from Ernie, so he doesn't need a duckie sitter after all. Oscar lets out a scream.
