SCENE 2 Susan and a kid see a couple of signs around Oscar's can; one reads, "Do Not Knock on Trashcan Lid" and the other points out a nearby doorbell. She rings it, and it makes a pleasant ding-dong sort of sound. Oscar doesn't care for it much and tells Susan to only ring if it's important. Before long, Mr. Hooper, Bob, and Gordon ring the doorbell as well to exchange pleasantries and enjoy the sound, which Oscar vows to do something about.

Susan presses the button, but now it plays an incredibly loud cacophonous mixture of klaxons, sirens, piercing whistles, boings, and other noises. Oscar knows that such a sound will make the others want to stay away and not bother him. As everyone else shuts their ears and complains, Gordon loudly suggests a message from the letter E.
