David Johansen (b. 1950) is a singer, songwriter, and comic actor, who has often performed under the character name Buster Poindexter, an alter-ego akin to Andy Kaufman's Tony Clifton. Johansen was known in the 1970s as the lead singer of the New York Dolls before finding worldwide fame in the late 80s as the gravelly voiced lounge singer Poindexter. He frequently performed as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live.
In 1989, Poindexter was the guest star in the "Musicians" episode of The Jim Henson Hour, where he sang his 1987 hit "Hot Hot Hot."
Elmo also sang "Hot Hot Hot" on the 1997 Sesame Street album Hot! Hot! Hot! Dance Songs.
