Cats are a domestic species of small mammal. In nursery rhymes, they can either be a house cat, a farm cat or a free-roaming feral cat. Cats are valued by humans for companionship and their ability to hunt mice. Several cats, often unnamed, appear in the stories told by Mother Goose in Jim Henson's Mother Goose Stories.

In the story of "Tommy Tucker" a stray cat with a bandaged tail teams up with the title character. The cat, claiming ownership of a barrel that Tommy Tucker slept in, demands rent. Tommy and the cat set off to find food so that Tommy can sing for some supper and pay off his newfound friend. When the mayor and his new wife offer to adopt Tommy, they say that the cat can come along too.

In the story of "Hey Diddle Diddle" Bobby's pet cat gets his tail stuck in a fiddle (which brings much amusement to the dog).

A stray cat befriends Peter and Paul in "Dicky Birds" and a crooked cat is featured in the story of "Crooked Man" to help catch a crooked mouse.

Stella's cat is featured in "Twinkle Twinkle".

An unnamed cat appears among the classroom pets at the conclusion of "Mary's Little Lamb," and two rooftop cats comment on the events throughout the story of "Willie Winkie."

Two named cats, Cookie and Snooze, are featured in the stories of "Pat-a-Cake" and "Pussy Cat Pussy Cat" respectively.
