David Johansen (b. 1950) is a singer, songwriter, and comic actor, who has often performed under the character name Buster Poindexter, an alter-ego akin to Andy Kaufman's Tony Clifton. Johansen was known in the 1970s as the lead singer of the New York Dolls before finding worldwide fame in the late 80s as the gravelly voiced lounge singer Poindexter. He frequently performed as a musical guest on Saturday Night Live during the 1986-87 season.
In 1989, Poindexter was the guest star in the "Musicians" episode of The Jim Henson Hour, where he performed his hit "All Night Party."
