Ben is Sergeant Thursday's partner in a Sesame Street spoof of the old-time radio and early television series Dragnet. The laconic Ben is a spoof of Ben Romero, Joe Friday's partner on the radio Dragnet (and in the TV premiere) from 1949 until 1951. The character was identified as "Dragnet Detective" in a 1973 Sesame Street style guide.
