Baseball is a sport played between two teams of nine players each. The first games were played in the mid 18th century in England, but it was in 1846 in Hoboken, New Jersey that saw the first game with codified rules played. Although Basketball and Football are also popular American sports, baseball is often called America's national past time, and the game has gained in popularity throughout the late 18th and early 19th century. Canada has remained closely linked with the U.S. in the history of baseball, and there are professional leagues and tournaments in the Netherlands, Australia, Japan, Mexico, and Puerto Rico.

Major League Baseball is the highest level of play in North America, operating since 1901. Composed of 30 teams, each team plays in its own unique park. The Chicago Cubs play at Wrigley Field, famous for its ivy covered outfield walls, and the New York Yankees play at Yankee Stadium, of which the original was nicknamed "The House That Ruth Built" after legendary player Babe Ruth. Beginning with the 1992 Olympic Games, baseball became a medal sport, but was dropped after the 2008 games, and efforts to reinstate it have been unsuccessful.

Baseball has had a great impact in America's popular culture. In 1888, Ernest Thayer's poem "Casey at the Bat" became so popular it inspired Vaudeville and other staged performances, audio recordings and film adapations. Little League Baseball oversees more then 7,000 children's baseball leagues, baseball caps have become a fashion item, and baseball cards are continually collected. Baseball movies have become a popular genre at the box office, and even Broadway has produced thematic material based on the game. Abbott and Costello cemented their fame and popularity with their famous "Who's on First" sketch, which TIME magazine named the best comedy routine of the twentieth century.
