Arthur Godfrey, eyeing his visitors warily

Arthur Godfrey (1903-1983) was a popular broadcaster and entertainer who, following a stint as a CBS radio announcer, established himself as an affable ukelele-strumming personality. His first solo radio series, Arthur Godfrey Time, remained on the air for nearly three decades, from 1945 until 1972, and he successfully made the transition into television, as Arthur Godfrey and His Friends, from 1949 until 1959.

Jim and Jane Henson made some early Muppet appearances on his television series in 1956. Godfrey also appeared as Santa Claus, opposite assorted Muppet Monsters, on The Ed Sullivan Show broadcast for December 24, 1967.
