It was announced in June 2009 that Archaia Studios Press signed a licensing deal with the Jim Henson Company to produce comic books based on Henson Company properties. Fraggle Rock, The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, MirrorMask and The StoryTeller were mentioned in the initial press release as possible titles. [1]

Representatives from Archaia and the Henson Company appeared on a panel at the San Diego Comic-Con in July 2009 to discuss their plans for the upcoming comics.[2]

The information revealed at Comic-Con included:

  • Brian Froud, the conceptual designer for the films The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth, will draw the covers for the Dark Crystal comic, and will serve as a "creative consultant" for the Henson line.
  • The Fraggle Rock comic would be the first book in the line, scheduled for spring 2010. The Fraggle comics are published in an eight-inch by eight-inch format, a size that Archaia has used for its Mouse Guard series. The book is an anthology series, with long and short stories. Archaia's Director of Development, Stephen Christy, said that the comic would include "new levels of interactivity that we're experimenting with. I know that sounds vague, but it's going to be really cool."

At Comic-Con in 2010, it was announced that an unproduced script by Jim Henson and Jerry Juhl entitled A Tale of Sand will be adapted into a comic book.[3]
