'80s Robot is a new character in the movie, The Muppets. He bears an uncanny resemblance to Omnibot 2000, a robot toy made by Tomy in the mid 80's, and was first glimpsed in the movie's teaser trailer, Being Green. He appeared once again in the official trailer for the movie, in which he was seen in a crowd of Muppets as well as driving the Muppets' cramped rental car.

In The Muppets, 80's Robot seems to be a servant to Kermit after the Muppets broke up. While gathering the Muppets, 80's Robot acts as the driver, and locator. He also seems to be a bit of an annoyance to Kermit, as 80's Robot is slow and tends to repeat itself and bump into things.

A June 2011 ComingSoon.net article described about a trip to The Muppets set:

โ€œ'80s Robot looks exactly like a larger scale version of any generic sci-fi toy you would have seen on your local drug store toy aisle back in the early '80s. Unlike most Muppets, '80s Robot appeared to be almost 100% plastic. Not the traditional felt and cloth we associate with Muppets. To that end, it is probably incorrect to label '80s Robot a Muppet at all. What we do know is that '80s Robot is Kermit's driver... as it is him in the driver's seat of the Rolls for the scene. This was later confirmed on set by Debbie McClellan, Disney's creative director for the Muppets (and again confirmed in the new trailer). [1]โ€

Trivia

  • The 80's Robot looks similar in appearance to R.O.B. from the Mario series and by name. It also comes from the eighties, the NES era where R.O.B. is mainly from.

Notes

'80s Robot was built by Legacy Effects. Their other feature film contributions include Terminator Salvation, 2012, Avatar, and Real Steel.
